I don't think we plan to do this. There would be no way to access the
categories! This would entail basically a total rewrite of the whole thing. It
sounds like what you really want is the Application Menu (AKA Kicker). It has
the sort of kind of compact vertical list you describe.
If the triangle menu implementation isn't working perfectly for you, that's a
bug that needs to be fixed. :) Can I ask you to file a new bug report for it?
