In Settings >> Views, in the General tab's Date Navigator section, there is an
option to show journal entries when in Journal view. Days with entries are
displayed in bold type, which personally I find to be a bit too subtle.

I will leave this bug open but move it to the wish list, to keep your
suggestions visible. There isn't much about the current journal view that I
like :-(.
