Is it an implementation detail, whose history is either fascinating, mundane,
or infuriating, depending on your perspective. :)
Long term, we can probably remove the desktop:// ioslave, as its reason for
existing has become tenuous at best. I have started a discussion about that
over here: https://phabricator.kde.org/T14361
