An appimage already provides some information if you get a backtrace; but if
you install Krita from ppa lime (I think it's already updated to 4.4.2?), you
should be able to get the full debug symbols from package "krita-dbgsym" too:

https://launchpad.net/~kritalime/+archive/ubuntu/ppa (on top there is a section
"If would also like to download debugging symbols for Krita:")

That should be good enough without building Krita yourself.

But if you do want to build Krita, see

When getting the backtrace, run Krita from gdb and then when it crashes, try
# bt
