As a workaround I would suggest to delete 
> root="/home/chris/typeclasses/recordings/contra-1"
from the file BEFORE committing into the version control. I've found that
Kdenlive opens the file correctly and after some changes it adds again the root
property. 

Although I would not guarantee if this solution is afe. Play with it and use it
your own risk.
