"why would one want to see no menubar ?"

Because the "Fundamentals" handbook says this always works, maybe?

Look at KHelpCenter, select "Fundamentals". In table of contents, select "The
Settings Menu" (help:/fundamentals/menus.html#menus.settings). Every KDE
application program is supposed to provide a facility for turning the menu bar
on and off. See screenshot.
