By the way, when digiKam hang earlier today with those 223 photos I made sure there was "no active process". I imported another batch of photos and now it took perhaps a second or two to populate all the thumbs that fit into the whole maximized window - fast! I didn't change anything in settings. Since showing thumbs really is fast, we can close this issue.
