After fighting over it in 2018 and uselessly offering my cooperation, I sadly catched there is not much interest in fixing it, so I switched to gnome3. But I am still reading this thread, in order to know if I will ever be able to use KDE again, it's always been my favourite. I can give you a hint: not all distros react the same way, I recently had some luck with debian sid and SolydK (pretty nice job distro, btw), so, if you're stubborn enough, your mileage might vary and you could find the sweet spot.
