I can confirm this for the 4.2.9 appimage.
For 5. In Brush Options, check "Overlay Mode", do you mean set the Blending
Mode to Overlay?
If so, it shows this behaviour for any brush blending mode.
Setting to Confirmed.
How this should be dealt with or could be dealt with is another matter.
