--- Comment #1 from Ahab Greybeard <ahab.greybe...@hotmail.co.uk> ---
You need to provide more information and a detailed description of what you do
and what happens.

Which version of krita are you using?

If you 'draw anything' in a layer, then that layer is obviously the selected
layer.
If a layer is selected then it will be in the Timeline docker. So, what do you
mean by 'Open the layer in the timeline'?

Where exactly do you right-click in the timeline? Which layer line? Which frame
number?

If you right-click in frame-n of any layer in the timeline and select 'Create
Blank Keyframe', it should indicate this by the timeline frame-n square having
a hollow blue rectangle around it and the canvas will be blank (a blank
keyframe) and the layer artwork will be pulled into frame-0.

What do you mean by 'literally nothing'? What changes (if any) do you see?

If you want to make existing (non animated) layer artwork into frame-0 of an
animated layer, you can do 'Create Duplicate Frame' in frame-0 of the timeline
for that layer, which will make it an animated layer
