            Bug ID: 405235
Summary: Slow startup and new file scan on low latency networks
           Product: digikam
           Version: 6.0.0
          Platform: Appimage
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: Database
          Assignee: digikam-bugs-n...@kde.org
          Reporter: iwannaber...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

I opened this bug regarding the comments made in this thread:
http://digikam.1695700.n4.nabble.com/digiKam-users-Digikam-in-low-latency-networks-td4707927.html

Basically, even having a local picture database in a fast SSD hard drive,
Digikam has trouble starting up and scanning for new pictures if those are
stored in a remote location and the latency (ping) is high. At the same time
this does not seem to be related to the network speed.

Basically, on a 50mbps (two-way) connection, with a 100ms ping on average, and
a collection containing around 100000 pictures, Digikam takes around 10 minutes
to show the main interface, and more than 12 hours to scan for new items.
During all that time, Digikam is not usable, as the interface freezes while it
is scanning for new items.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start digikam with a local database but with pictures stored in a low
latency (>100ms) network.
2. Wait 10 minutes until the interface shows up.
3. Wait an additional 12 hours if "scanning for new items" is activated.

OBSERVED RESULT
Digikam takes a long time to be responsive.

EXPECTED RESULT
Digikam should start faster, the scan for new pictures should be faster, and
digikam could be responsive during that scan.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Linux/KDE Plasma: Ubuntu 18.04 on Gnome. Using the last 6.0beta appimage built
before the 6.1 release.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

No, that's about it.
