It is normal that some characters extend above the ascent or below the descent, because these are defined for a "typical" character. You'll find that most fonts have characters extending above their ascent (look at the range U+00C0 to U+00DD). The Java FontMetrics class got it right: it defines getAscent and getMaxAscent.
