I've been able to reproduce it.
Steps:
1. Create an 8-bit integer/channel canvas.
2. In the toolbar, in the icon to swap colors, press in upper left color: The
color picker uses 8-bit colors.
3. In the toolbar, in the icon to swap colors, press in the lower right color:
The color picker uses 16-bit colors.
