Same for me, have 3 sinks from "pacmd list-sinks" with the combined-sink as the
default, for a bluetooth headset and wired headset. Setting mute on the wired
headset marks the icon in the task bar as muted even though the bluetooth
headset is not and works properly. As you say the multimedia keys on my
keyboard control the muted channel rather than the combined one.
