That sounds like you have Windows and an Intel graphics chip. Some versions of
Intel drivers are broken and cause a black screen. You have to go to
settings/configure krita/display and disable opengl. See:

We hope to bring out a new 3.0 pre-alpha developer build this weekend which has
a fix that mitigates the problem with some intel cards/drivers.
