This is a bit confusing and lack consistency. Additionaly, a double left-click on an empty area will open a new tab and left-click on new tab buttons will open a new tab too. So the current middle-click behaviour on empty area is redundant. IMHO current middle-click options should be disabled first. Tab re-opening is already allowed with shortcut and right-click menu, middle-click re-opening should be optional.
