I have the same problem using the following versions:
KDE Plasma: 5.11.4
KDE Frameworks: 5.41.0
Qt: 5.9.3
Kernel: 4.12.12-gentoo
I'm using the nouveau driver, so I doubt it is driver related.
In order to test if this is background image related, I watched the memory used
by plasmashell while cycling through background images using the context menu
option. Every time I change the image I can see a large increase in RSS.
For me this issue is fairly new. I can't pin it down exactly, but I would think
it must be related to my last update, which included the updates to frameworks
5.41 from 5.40 and Qt 5.9.3 from 5.7.x (not sure what exact version I used
previously).
