Turns out XRender compositing affects VLC too which is pretty bad. Another 'workaround' is to use 'slim' instead of SDDM. I thought about opening a ticket in the SDDM GitHub page...but they have 200+ open issues and doesn't seem they care that much. I think SDDM should be abandoned for good. And I do totally understand your comment about Linux newbies.
