I confirm I have the same behavior in 1.6.1, with stock message app from
CyanogenMod (Android 2.3.3).
Let's note also that I have two apps creating backups for my SMS (they send it
to a mail address), and none of them pick them up.
Maybe the differences between your behavior and ours is the API version (I see
there are some behavior changes in the docs starting from API 19). Or maybe
it's because you use SmsManager instead of an intent using the default app. I
have no idea, I'm not an Android dev.
Anyway, I see that behavior too, so I can confirm.
