            Bug ID: 528471
Summary: Request permission elevation, when unable to read the
                    assigned file/path.
    Classification: Applications
           Product: kate
      Version First 26.08.2
       Reported In:
          Platform: Fedora RPMs
               URL: https://discuss.kde.org/t/51634?u=rokejulianlockhart
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: kwrite
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

# DESCRIPTION

Currently, KWrite does not permit itself to be invoked via standard superuser
elevation tools (of which `run0` and `pkexec` are modern, recommended
examples). Instead, the error message, that it produces when someone attempts
to, advises them to utilise KWrite's graphical JIT elevation mechanism.

That referred-to mechanism successfully applies to files like
`/etc/default/grub`, wherein one observes a PolicyKit prompt for
`org.kde.ktexteditor6.katetextbuffer.savefile`, upon the point of save.

However, it fails at `/etc/ssh/sshd_config`, which `nano` and `vi` do not fail
to invoke. I am quite disappointed that I remain forced to either log in as the
superuser, or invoke a TUI, to perform the menial task of modifying my OpenSSHD
configuration. For comparison, Windows provides convenient elevation
capabilities for this exact situation, via its Administrator mode.

# EXPECTED RESULT

KWrite should request elevation when it is asked to access a file that is
unreadable, due to the permissions of that file's owner being superordinate to
those of its current invoker/user. With that elevation, it should be able to,
thereafter, modify the file. (At the least, it should be able to read it.)
