--- Comment #7 from [email protected] ---
I've done some more digging on this now, from what I can tell the problem here
is that the KDE disable touchpad toggle is disabling a device group which
includes the trackpoint when it should simply be suppressing the input from the
touch pad, which is what the "xinput float 11" command I used to be able to use
was doing

I tried various approaches to work around this on the command line, with UDEV
rules to disable devices, but this caused the same problem, they disabled both
touchpad and trackpoint.

The only workaround I have found that works is to create a custom systemd
service that uses the evtest tool to grab the input from the touchpad as a way
of suppressing it:

[Unit]
Description=Grab Synaptics touchpad events
After=multi-user.target

[Service]
#ExecStart=/usr/bin/evtest --grab /dev/input/event6
ExecStart=/usr/bin/evtest --grab
/dev/input/by-path/pci-0000:00:14.0-usb-0:7:1.2-event-mouse
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=2
StandardOutput=null

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

This will work with both the numbered event node (commented out) or the more
stable device name. So I think what needs to happen is for the "disable
touchpad" toggle in KDE to identify the input that receives touchpad events and
to ignore it instead of trying to disable underlying devices which can have
unintended side effects.
