Faulty display configuration after the 2nd monitor is turned on

DESCRIPTION

kwin_wayland crashes once a second external monitor connected via a DisplayLink
dock is turned on. As long as one external monitor only is turned on while
connected to the dock, the desktop works as usual.

After a successful login, if the two external monitors are both on, the crash
takes place immediately after detect the 1st external monitor.

Turning off the 2nd external monitor doesn't restore normal desktop operation,
you need to reboot with the 2nd external monitor turned off, or at least before
the login.

It might be worth to mention that the two monitors are connected via
DisplayPorts (not HDMI).

The issue started after updating to KDE 6.8.2.

This bug might be a duplicate of bug 527984, but I noticed a few differences
compared to 527984 (or maybe they were just not reported there).

The crash is partial. Meaning that all monitors, including the builtin screen,
are indeed pitch black with no windows, but the desktop is still functioning.
The mouse can still be moved on all screens, even on the 2nd external monitor,
and apps can be started anywhere via KRunner (alt+F2).

After that, I ran a test, the unexpected result of which is shown in the
attachment.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. With the Displaylink dock on, turn on one external monitor only. The 2nd
external monitor can be connected to the dock but must be turned off.
2. Boot and login on Neon 6.8.2
3. Open the "Display Configuration" (System Settings >> Display & Monitor)
while on the builtin screen. External monitor and builtin screen should be the
only screens and identified as expected.
4. Turn on now the 2nd external monitor.

OBSERVED RESULT
kwin_wayland crashed but the "System Settings" window is still visible. In
"Display Configuration" every screen, being from the external monitors or from
the built screen, is now duplicated multiple times with the clones/copies of
the 3 "physical" screens overlapping each other. Each clone can be freely moved
around in the arrangement.

EXPECTED RESULT
kwin_wayland should remain stable and "Display Configuration" should identify
and show three screens only, and in the expected arrangement. Without any
additional clone/copy.
