Generally the decision about what prompts for a password vs what lets it through without prompting is left up to the distro. What distro are you using? Also, the error message itself is pretty clear that it doesn't support what you're doing. So the other plausible possibility is that the VPN plugin itself changed to stop supporting per-user connections.
