Bug ID: 527667
Summary: Screen never turns off after automatic lock when "When
locked, turn off screen" equals the dim timeout
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First 6.7.5
Reported In:
Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: Power management & brightness
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: 1.0
On AC power, if the "When locked, turn off screen" delay is the same as the
"Dim automatically" delay (both 5 minutes, which is also when the screen
auto-locks), the screen is never turned off after an automatic lock. It stays
on, dimmed, indefinitely (it was still on the next morning after leaving it
overnight).
Locking manually (Meta+L) with the same settings does turn the screen off after
5 minutes. Changing only "When locked, turn off screen" to 10 minutes fixes
automatic locking: the screen turns off 10 minutes after the lock.
Turning the display off by hand works fine (`kscreen-doctor --dpms off`), and
nothing is inhibiting: PolicyAgent ListInhibitions is empty and the activity
has InhibitScreenManagement=false.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. System Settings → Power Management → On AC Power:
- Dim automatically: 5 minutes (default)
- Turn off screen: 10 minutes (default)
- When locked, turn off screen: 5 minutes
- When inactive: Do nothing
2. Screen Locking: lock screen automatically after 5 minutes (default).
3. Leave the computer untouched.
OBSERVED RESULT
At 5 minutes idle the screen dims and locks at the same moment. PowerDevil
registers the "when locked" DPMS timeout, but it never fires. The screen stays
on, dimmed, until there's user input.
EXPECTED RESULT
The screen turns off 5 minutes after the automatic lock.
LOG EVIDENCE (QT_LOGGING_RULES=org.kde.powerdevil*.debug=true)
Failing: automatic lock, when-locked = 300 s
10:58:59 DPMS: registering idle timeout (screen unlocked) after 600000ms
11:05:38 DimDisplay: triggered on idle timeout, dimming
11:05:38 DPMS: registering idle timeout (screen lock activating) after
300000ms
(nothing further)
11:24:42 DimDisplay: restoring brightness on wake-up from idle
Working: manual lock (Meta+L) with the same settings
10:36:36 DPMS: registering idle timeout (screen lock activating) after
300000ms
10:41:35 DPMS: triggered on idle timeout, turning off display and keyboard
backlight
10:41:35 DimDisplay: triggered on idle timeout, dimming
Working: automatic lock, when-locked = 600 s (only change)
11:31:42 DimDisplay: triggered on idle timeout, dimming
11:31:43 DPMS: registering idle timeout (screen lock activating) after
600000ms
11:41:43 DPMS: triggered on idle timeout, turning off display and keyboard
backlight
The only failing case is the one where the DPMS "lock activating" timeout
(300000 ms) is registered at the same moment the DimDisplay timeout of the same
length (300000 ms) has just fired. That suggests two idle timeouts of the same
duration clash, possibly in how KIdleTime/PowerDevil match timeouts. I haven't
checked the code.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Fedora Linux 44 (KDE Plasma Desktop Edition), kernel
7.2.11-200.fc44.x86_64
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5 (powerdevil, kwin, kscreenlocker 6.7.5)
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
Qt Version: 6.11.2
Graphics Platform: Wayland
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Hardware: HP 15s laptop, AMD Renoir (Radeon Vega) iGPU. The built-in panel is
broken/disconnected (eDP-1 disconnected), so the only output is an external
HDMI monitor (ASUS VZ27EHF).
- Possibly related, but not the same: bug 476962 (fixed, introduced the
separate "lock activating" timeout) and metabug 506459.
- Workaround: set "When locked, turn off screen" to anything other than the dim
delay.
