SUMMARY
After upgrading from Plasma 6.7.5 to 6.8.0 (Qt 6.11.2 -> 6.12.0), with systemd
boot enabled,
every graphical XDG autostart application fails at login on Wayland, including
plasma-fallback-session-restore, org.kde.discover.notifier, octopi-notifier and
hplip-systray.
Everything worked on 6.7.5. systemd was NOT updated in the same transaction.
ERROR (plasma-fallback-session-restore, SIGABRT on every login since the
upgrade):
Failed to create wl_display (No such file or directory)
Could not load the Qt platform plugin "wayland" in "" even though it was
found.
could not connect to display
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be
initialized.
JOURNAL ORDERING (user session):

graphical-session.target is reached BEFORE graphical-session-pre.target and

WAYLAND_DISPLAY/DISPLAY are imported into the systemd user environment, so all
After=graphical-session.target autostart units start without a display.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Plasma 6.8.0/6.8.1 Wayland session, systemdBoot=true (default)
2. Have any graphical app in XDG autostart
3. Log in
OBSERVED: autostart units are in "failed" state; manually restarting them
afterwards works
(systemctl --user restart 'app-octopi\[email protected]' ->
running).
EXPECTED: autostart units start after the compositor is ready.
WORKAROUND
kwriteconfig6 --file startkderc --group General --key systemdBoot false
-> all autostart apps and session restore work again.
