            Bug ID: 527466
Summary: Plasma 6.8: Plasmashell components ignore font
                    anti-aliasing exclusion range
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: plasmashell
      Version First 6.8.0
       Reported In:
          Platform: EndeavourOS
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
          Assignee: [email protected]

  Target Milestone: 1.0

DESCRIPTION

After updating from Plasma 6.7.x to Plasma 6.8.0, several Plasmashell UI
components appear to ignore the configured font anti-aliasing settings.

My system is configured to enable font anti-aliasing while excluding font sizes
8-15 pt from anti-aliasing.

Applications such as Firefox, Thunderbird, Kate, Spectacle and KDE System
Settings correctly respect the configured font settings.

However, several Plasmashell components still render anti-aliased text although
they are expected not to.

Affected components include:
- Digital Clock widget (default Plasma clock)
- Application Launcher
- Plasma notifications
- Other Plasma widgets (e.g. storage usage widget)

The issue is reproducible on the main system as well as multiple virtual
machines.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

1. Open System Settings → Text & Fonts.
2. Enable font anti-aliasing.
3. Enable "Exclude range from anti-aliasing" and set the range to 8-15 pt.
4. Apply the settings and restart Plasma or log out and log in again.
5. Compare text rendering in Plasmashell components with text rendering in
regular applications.

OBSERVED RESULT

Applications such as Firefox, Thunderbird, Kate, Spectacle and KDE System
Settings correctly respect the anti-aliasing configuration.

Plasmashell components such as the Digital Clock widget, Application Launcher,
notifications and other Plasma widgets continue to render text with
anti-aliasing enabled.

The behavior remains the same even when anti-aliasing is completely disabled.

EXPECTED RESULT

All Plasmashell components should respect the configured font anti-aliasing
settings in the same way as other applications and KDE applications do.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Operating System: EndeavourOS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
Qt Version: 6.12.0

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Configuration used during testing:

- General font: Verdana 10 pt
- Fixed width font: Hack 10 pt
- Anti-aliasing: Enabled
- Anti-aliasing exclusion range: 8-15 pt
- Hinting: Slight
- Sub-pixel rendering: RGB

The issue is still present when anti-aliasing is completely disabled.

Additional comparison:

A separate Manjaro KDE installation running Plasma 6.7.4 was tested with the
same font configuration.

Results:
- Plasma 6.7.4 on X11 (Manjaro): anti-aliasing exclusion range works as
expected
- Plasma 6.7.4 on Wayland (Manjaro): anti-aliasing exclusion range works as
expected
- Plasma 6.8.0 on Wayland (EndeavourOS): issue present

The comparison is not distribution-neutral because Plasma 6.8.0 was not yet
available on the tested Manjaro installation at the time of testing. However,
the issue appeared immediately after updating to Plasma 6.8.0 on EndeavourOS.

This suggests that the issue is related to Plasma 6.8 rather than Wayland
itself.
