Bug ID: 527442
Summary: Regression (6.8.0): Software-dimmed external displays
flash to full brightness when cursor moves between
screens
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.8.0
Reported In:
Platform: CachyOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: multi-screen
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Connect two external displays: a monitor and a TV.
Set software brightness below 100% on both, for example monitor at 15% and TV
at 20–30%.
Move the mouse cursor from one display to the other.
OBSERVED RESULT
When the cursor crosses between displays, the screens briefly flash to full
brightness and then return to the dimmed level. The flash is very short, but it
happens on every crossing.
EXPECTED RESULT
Brightness stays at the configured level when the cursor moves between
displays, as it did in 6.7.5.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Regression: the issue started right after upgrading kwin from 6.7.5-3.1 to
6.8.0-1.1. It did not happen on 6.7.5.
Setting KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1 in /etc/environment fixes the issue completely, which
points to the atomic modesetting path.
KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1 and disabling Adaptive Sync were also tried and did not
help.
Displays: [monitor model] via [DP/HDMI], [TV model] via [DP/HDMI]
