Bug ID: 527360
Summary: Kasts fails to launch on Windows 11 because Smart App
Control blocks unsigned DLLs.
Classification: Applications
Product: kasts
Version First unspecified
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: Microsoft Windows
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
**DESCRIPTION**
Kasts does not start correctly on Windows 11 when Smart App Control is enabled.
The same issue occurs with two official KDE Windows builds. Windows Code
Integrity logs show that `org_kde_desktop.dll` is blocked by the applicable
code integrity policy.
Could the KDE team investigate the Windows packaging and code-signing of Kasts
and provide a build compatible with Smart App Control? I do not want to disable
Windows security features to run Kasts.
A similar issue has been reported for Kdenlive on the KDE forum:
https://discuss.kde.org/t/kdenlive-does-not-launch-properly-due-to-unsigned-files/51049
**STEPS TO REPRODUCE**
1. Install `kasts-release_26.08-4830-windows-cl-msvc2022-x86_64.exe` on Windows
11.
2. Launch Kasts with Smart App Control enabled.
3. Repeat with `kasts-release_26.08-4864-windows-cl-msvc2022-x86_64.exe`.
**OBSERVED RESULT**
Kasts does not display its normal application window and may remain running in
the background. Windows displays the notification: “Smart App Control has
blocked a part of this app.”
The Windows Event Viewer, under `Microsoft-Windows-CodeIntegrity/Operational`,
records the following message:
```text
Code Integrity determined that a process (\Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program
Files\Kasts\bin\kasts.exe) attempted to load \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program
Files\Kasts\bin\org\kde\desktop\org_kde_desktop.dll that did not meet the
Enterprise signing level requirements or violated code integrity policy (Policy
ID:{0283ac0f-fff1-49ae-ada1-8a933130cad6}).
```
PowerShell reports the Authenticode signature status of `org_kde_desktop.dll`
as `NotSigned`. A check of the installation directory also reports many other
DLLs as unsigned.
**EXPECTED RESULT**
Kasts launches normally on Windows 11 with Smart App Control enabled, without
requiring the user to weaken Windows security.
**SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS**
Operating System: Windows 11, 64-bit
Kasts versions tested:
- `26.08-4830`
- `26.08-4864`
Installation directory: `C:\Program Files\Kasts`
KDE Plasma Version: Not applicable / not installed
KDE Frameworks Version: Unknown
Qt Version: Unknown
**ADDITIONAL INFORMATION**
Both builds exhibit the same problem. Smart App Control has not been disabled.
The issue appears to concern the Windows build's DLL signing or compatibility
with Smart App Control.
