Bug ID: 527310
Summary: [KWin Wayland] Severe global color distortion and
sub-5 FPS desktop stutter on 240Hz QD-OLED when Color
Accuracy is set to "Prefer efficiency"
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First git-stable-Plasma/6.3
Reported In:
Platform: CachyOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: colour-management

Target Milestone: ---
Following a regular CachyOS update I did last night, setting Color accuracy to
"Prefer efficiency" on my primary, high-refresh OLED monitor causes severe
desktop rendering degradation and global color pipeline corruption across the
system.
Symptoms:
1. Global Color Distortion: Anything rendered across both monitors becomes
extremely distorted and visually corrupted, indicating a failure in KWin's
color transformation/ICC pipeline.
2. Extreme Stutter / Lag: Moving the mouse cursor anywhere on the primary
monitor becomes very stuttery and unreadable, feeling like a sub-5 FPS
slideshow.
Changing the primary display's Color accuracy setting from "Prefer efficiency"
to "Prefer color accuracy" immediately restores proper color profiles across
all monitors and brings desktop compositing back to a smooth high refresh rate.
Hardware / OS Environment:
- OS: CachyOS Linux (KDE Plasma 6.8 on Wayland)
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT
- Graphics Driver: Mesa (latest rolling release)
- Displays:
- Primary Display: Dell Alienware AW2726DM (1440p @ 239.97 Hz, HDR Enabled,
Wide Color Gamut)
- Secondary Display: LG ULTRAGEAR (1080p @ 120 Hz)
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open System Settings -> Display & Monitor -> Display Configuration.
2. Select the primary high-refresh panel (1440p 240Hz QD-OLED w/ HDR).
3. Under Color accuracy, set the option to "Prefer efficiency".
4. Apply settings.
5. Observe:
- Severe global color corruption and distorted mapping across both connected
displays.
- Massive cursor and window movement stutter (sub-5 FPS feel) on the primary
display.
6. Change Color accuracy on the primary panel to "Prefer color accuracy" and
apply.
7. Result: Desktop immediately returns to normal color accuracy across both
monitors and restores smooth high-refresh rendering.
Observed Behavior:
Under "Prefer efficiency", KWin's direct scanout / color transformation path
fails when handling the high bit-depth 1440p 240Hz panel, breaking global color
rendering across all active monitors and choking compositor frame pacing down
to single digits.
Expected Behavior:
"Prefer efficiency" should handle hardware direct scanout without corrupting
the global color space across displays or causing severe compositor stuttering.
Workaround:
Set Color Accuracy to "Prefer color accuracy" on the primary high-refresh
display.
