Bug ID: 527100
Summary: Plasma wallpaper settings do not reliably apply or
persist on a multi-monitor desktop when logging out
and back in again!
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First 6.6.6
Reported In:
Platform: Kubuntu
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: Wallpaper images
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: 1.0
## DESCRIPTION
I encountered an issue with desktop wallpaper settings on a three-monitor KDE
Plasma desktop. The wallpaper configuration did not consistently behave as
expected, specifically regarding the background colour and fill mode.
I was able to work around the problem by using Plasma's scripting interface to
write the settings directly and reload the wallpaper configuration. The
workaround corrected the affected monitor, and the change persisted after
logging out and back in.
I have not established the exact cause of the issue or whether it can be
reproduced consistently.
## STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Use a KDE Plasma desktop with three monitors, each with its own desktop
containment and wallpaper configuration.
2. Configure the wallpaper image, background colour and fill mode using the
normal desktop wallpaper settings interface.
3. Check whether the displayed wallpaper matches the selected settings, then
log out and back in to check whether the settings persist.
I have not yet confirmed that these steps reproduce the issue reliably on
demand.
## OBSERVED RESULT
The wallpaper did not consistently reflect the intended settings. In my case,
the background colour and fill mode were not behaving as expected.
Writing the settings directly through Plasma's scripting interface and
reloading the configuration corrected the affected monitor. The correction
persisted after logging out and back in.
## EXPECTED RESULT
Wallpaper settings configured through Plasma's normal desktop interface should
apply to the intended monitor and remain consistent with the saved
configuration after logging out and back in.
## SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Kubuntu 26.04 LTS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
Kernel Version: 7.0.0-38-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 8 × Intel Core i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz
Memory: 64 GiB RAM (62.8 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060
Manufacturer: MSI
Product Name: MS-7971
System Version: 1.0
## ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The system has three monitors, arranged as follows:
- Left: Huion display, DP-2, 1920 × 1080
- Middle: DP-3, 1920 × 1080
- Right: DP-1, 1920 × 1080
The wallpaper image was `bird-logo.png`. The intended background colour was
`#322828`, with fill mode `6` (centred).
### Workaround
The following command corrected the wallpaper settings on the left-hand monitor
in my configuration:
```bash
qdbus6 org.kde.plasmashell /PlasmaShell org.kde.PlasmaShell.evaluateScript 'var
d = desktopById(55); d.currentConfigGroup = ["Wallpaper", "org.kde.image",
"General"]; d.writeConfig("Color", "#322828"); d.writeConfig("FillMode", 6);
d.reloadConfig();'
```
The command writes the intended background colour and fill mode to desktop
containment ID `55`, then reloads the wallpaper configuration. The wallpaper
appeared as intended, and the correction persisted after logging out and back
in.
The containment ID is specific to my desktop configuration. This is a
workaround, not a permanent fix to Plasma itself.
I have not established whether the problem is specific to my setup or affects
other multi-monitor configurations. I think iit's a problem when upgrading from
one Plasma version to another
