Feature request: optional automatic sorting of downloads by file type
Hello,,
I would like to suggest a feature that I think would be useful for most desktop
users: optional, rule-based sorting of downloaded files by type.
Currently, browsers such as Firefox save everything into a single download
folder. Per-type target folders are not possible there, and browser extensions
can only create subfolders inside that one folder. As a result, ~/Downloads
fills up with documents, images, archives, videos, installers and disk images
all mixed together.
I solved this for myself with a small script and a systemd path unit that
watches ~/Downloads and moves finished files by extension into folders such as
Documents, Pictures, Archives, Videos, Music, Programs and ISOs. It works, but
every user would have to set this up manually, and it seems like something a
distribution or desktop environment could offer out of the box.
My suggestion:
- An optional setting (off by default, or on in a beginner-oriented default
setup) that sorts completed downloads by MIME type or extension.
- Editable rules, so users can change target folders and file types.
- Ideally a shared approach across desktops, for example via freedesktop.org,
so that it does not have to be implemented separately by each project.
I am happy to share my script as a starting point or to help test an
implementation.
Thank you for your work and for considering this idea.
Best regards,
Julian
