Bug ID: 526738
Summary: Very poor performance when using the Zoom / Magnifier
feature
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First unspecified

OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED

Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
When I use the zoom effect (Alt + =) the video becomes very laggy. The issue is
even more apparent when I use an external monitor.
When I disable the option "Sharpen screen content while zoomed in" I get decent
performance. However, this option is "on" by default, and it took me months to
figure out that disabling it fixes the issue.
Here's where I found the answer:
https://discuss.kde.org/t/kde-plasma-6-7-performance-regression-on-intel/48032/2
I suggest this feature be either (i) reworked to achieve better performance or
(ii) be disabled by default.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Use the zoom effect when an external monitor is plugged in (in extended
mode; not mirrored)
2. Notice the reduction in performance
3. Disable the option "Sharpen screen content while zoomed in" in the settings
4. Now performance is decent, but content is not sharpened
OBSERVED RESULT
Degraded performance
EXPECTED RESULT
Normal performance when zoom is applied
