Bug ID: 523938
Summary: [KWin Wayland + NVIDIA 580] Screen flickering on
Plasma login screen and in specific Qt/XWayland apps
(e.g. Nekoray) prior to user interaction
Classification: Applications

[Wayland + NVIDIA] Login screen flickers until first mouse interaction; similar
flicker in some apps (e.g. Nekoray)
Description:
I am reporting a persistent flickering / frame-pacing issue on Fedora 44 KDE
Plasma with NVIDIA drivers on Wayland.
Environment:
- OS: Fedora 44 KDE Plasma
- Kernel: 7.1.6-201.fc44.x86_64 (issue was also reproduced on 7.1.4-202)
- Desktop: KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland
- GPU: NVIDIA
- NVIDIA driver: 580.173.02
- nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is enabled
Symptoms:
1. The login screen (SDDM / Plasma login) flickers visibly after boot.
2. The flickering continues until I move/click the mouse for the first time.
3. After the first pointer interaction, the login screen stabilizes.
4. Similar flickering also appears in some applications such as Nekoray.
What I already tried:
- Verified the system is now stable on the newer kernel.
- Reinstalled and rebuilt kernel module dependencies.
- Rebuilt initramfs with dracut.
- Rebuilt NVIDIA modules with akmods --force.
- Confirmed NVIDIA DRM modeset is enabled.
Result:
The system is otherwise stable; networking and audio work correctly. The issue
seems specific to Plasma Wayland/KWin rendering behavior with NVIDIA, affecting
the login screen and some apps.
