Not this feature, but closely related: the ledger has gained an optional
single-line "Memo" column in master (commit
e86b2bad06eda064624769d7dc101702e58e8d66,
https://invent.kde.org/office/kmymoney/-/merge_requests/394, to be released in
5.3).

It was added through exactly the mechanism a Category/Account column would
need: a new column in JournalModel plus its entry in the column selector of the
header context menu. So there is now a recent, working precedent for adding an
optional ledger column, and being opt-in it avoids the screen-width concern
raised here — users who do not want the column never see it.

What would still need a decision for a category column is what to display for a
transaction with more than two splits; presumably the same "Split transaction"
text the details column uses today.

Leaving this report open, since the category column itself is not implemented.
