It was added through exactly the mechanism a Category/Account column would need: a new column in JournalModel plus its entry in the column selector of the header context menu. So there is now a recent, working precedent for adding an optional ledger column, and being opt-in it avoids the screen-width concern raised here — users who do not want the column never see it. What would still need a decision for a category column is what to display for a transaction with more than two splits; presumably the same "Split transaction" text the details column uses today.
