Bug ID: 523484
Summary: OBS PipeWire window/screen capture permanently freezes
the Plasma panel (taskbar + Meta key) on KDE Plasma
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.7.3
Reported In:
Platform: CachyOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: major
Priority: NOR
Component: screencasting
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
When OBS Studio uses a PipeWire screen/window capture source on KDE Plasma
(CachyOS), capturing any window through xdg-desktop-portal-kde causes the
entire plasmashell panel to become completely unresponsive within seconds —
both the Meta key taskbar shortcut and direct mouse clicks on the taskbar stop
working. The freeze persists even after closing OBS and does not recover on its
own.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. On KDE Plasma (CachyOS), open OBS Studio.
2. Add a Screen Capture (PipeWire) source and select any window (tested with a
game and with a plain terminal window).
3. Start the capture.
OBSERVED RESULT
Within seconds, the plasmashell panel becomes completely unresponsive — the
Meta key shortcut and mouse clicks on the taskbar both stop working. Closing
OBS does not fix it. Running `killall plasmashell` (which auto-restarts it)
temporarily restores the panel, but it freezes again the next time PipeWire
capture is used.
EXPECTED RESULT
The panel/taskbar and Meta key shortcut should remain responsive throughout and
after the capture.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Reproducible regardless of the captured window's content (tested with a game
and a terminal), ruling out an app-specific interaction.
- Persists after rolling back to a full system snapshot from before a recent
system update, ruling out that update as the root cause.
