And this is already possible; you can simply add files like PDF, TXT, or XLS as MIME types in the digiKam settings under View, for example, as the image MIME type. https://docs.digikam.org/en/setup_application/views_settings.html#mime-types-settings You might even have metadata for some files via ExifTool, and for some, even a thumbnail, e.g., for PDFs. For others, only a generic icon. The only drawback I see is that digiKam will repeatedly attempt to generate a thumbnail internally for file types where a thumbnail cannot be created.
