Bug ID: 516409
Summary: Memory leak (gigabytes) - Removing files from project
bin / timeline does not actually free memory.
Classification: Applications
Product: kdenlive
Version First 25.04.0
Reported In:
Platform: Microsoft Windows
OS: Microsoft Windows
Status: REPORTED
Severity: major
Priority: NOR
Component: Project Bin & Import
Assignee: [email protected]

Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY:
Memory leak (in gigabytes) - Removing files from project bin / timeline does
not actually free memory.
Whenever you add files to the project bin / timeline, then remove them, it does
not lower memory usage. THis results in KDENlive bloating in RAM size if you
keep working on the same project for some time. The only way to fix the RAM
usage is to restart KDENlive. I know this is not the case because, on the same
exact machine, with version 24.x.x (I can't remember quite which one) I was
able to render 8+ hour long 1080p60 recording sessions that had raw file sizes
of 20+ GB for the incoming footage. This is nowhere near possible anymore with
the new version.
I have recorded a video that showcases how this usually happens:
https://youtu.be/r5lxgjwy7fc
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Begin adding clips to the project bin, then the timeline
2. Delete them from the timeline / project bin
3. Repeat
OBSERVED RESULT
The RAM usage stays mostly the same as you delete the files, and increases as
you add more, until the program is restarted - therefore it's a memory leak.
EXPECTED RESULT
The RAM usage decreases once the files are deleted.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows 11 (25H2)
