The maintenance tool only creates fingerprints for the selected albums, which I think is a bad idea, as it's easy to forget which albums have been fingerprinted. The button in the Duplicates tab updates/creates missing fingerprints for all albums; I recommend this approach. In digiKam-8.8.0, we've sped up the display of duplicate items in the list view (separate thread).
