            Bug ID: 507133
Summary: Wayland session freezes on AMDGPU (7900XTX) due to
atomic commit hangs — Plasma 6.3.5 on Debian 13
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: kwin
      Version First unspecified
       Reported In:
          Platform: Debian testing
                OS: Other
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: compositing
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

Product: Plasma
Component: Wayland Session / KWin

Version: 6.3.5

Platform: Debian 13 (Trixie), AMDGPU

Description:

I am experiencing frequent compositor freezes under Plasma 6.3.5 Wayland on
Debian 13 (Trixie) with an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX.

The freeze symptoms:

Desktop becomes unresponsive

Switching TTY works, but switching back shows a black screen or unresponsive
SDDM

Music and background apps keep running

Requires restarting the session or killing KWin/systemd-logind to recover

This happens during normal desktop usage — such as browsing (Brave Browser) or
file management — and never occurs during gaming.
It is not linked to suspend/resume or frequent TTY switching.

Tested mitigations with no success:

Switching off variable refresh rate (VRR)

Lowering refresh rate from 144 Hz to 120 Hz

Updating to 6.16.0-rc6 mainline kernel with latest linux-firmware

Switching browsers (testing with LibreWolf now)

The kernel consistently logs:

swift
Copy code
WARNING: CPU: X PID: Y at
drivers/gpu/drm/amd/display/amdgpu_dm/amdgpu_dm.c:8810
amdgpu_dm_atomic_commit_tail

System Info:

Plasma 6.3.5 on Debian 13 (Wayland session)

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX (undervolted, stable in gaming)

Kernel: 6.16.0-rc6 (but issue also observed on 6.15.x)

Firmware: Updated July 2025

AMDGPU driver in kernel (no Mesa patches)

SDDM as display manager

Steps to Reproduce:

Boot into Plasma Wayland session

Open Brave or file manager, perform light desktop usage

Wait for compositor freeze (may take minutes or longer)

Check kernel logs for amdgpu_dm_atomic_commit_tail warnings

Expected Result:
Normal atomic commits without freezing the session

Actual Result:
Session freeze requiring intervention

Additional Notes:
I’m aware of upstream atomic commit/DMUB issues in AMDGPU but filing this here
in case it involves KWin or the Wayland session manager’s interaction with
DRM/KMS.
