I still don't see any reason for why this would happen, but could you retest
with a newer NVidia driver version - perhaps it's a driver bug that they fixed?
If it still happens, you could try switching to a different tty. If that's
black as well, then we know it's a driver bug. If that works, then you could
try starting weston from the tty to see if a different compositor would work,
or if it's broken as well.
