I think you may have misunderstood the option. It's working as intended: when
you uncheck that checkbox, clicking on the image itself does not open it in an
external app.
However, the little icon that appears on hover will always open the image on
click, and it's expected that it appears on hover whether or not the checkbox
is checked.
