Bug ID: 497385 Summary: Text as an effect instead of a clip Classification: Applications Product: kdenlive Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS: Other Status: REPORTED Severity: wishlist Priority: NOR Component: Video Effects & Transitions Assignee: j...@kdenlive.org Reporter: thomaspatton2...@yahoo.com Target Milestone: --- I have a discuss post going currently talking about this: https://discuss.kde.org/t/text-as-an-effect-intead-of-a-clip/26738 A video demonstrating my particular bottleneck issue, but more info below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ad_No2g1M8 The way text is handled in Kdenlive is probably my biggest workflow bottleneck, and the features available in the title clip don't meet my particular needs (making simple lyric videos to music). I believe having a fully featured text editor available as an effect that can be dropped on a clip or a track would resolve every issue I have with this aspect of kdenlive. The discuss post goes in to a lot of detail with many questions asked and workarounds proposed, but I wanted to summarize some of them for simplicity. I've seen other requests regarding the title clip and text, but I have not found one for requesting text as an effect instead of a clip. - The title clip does not currently have sufficient functionality to render text that would otherwise go beyond the viewport. It is technically possible, but it comes with a quality compromise that I think most would be unwilling to give as well as requiring multiple additional steps that are frustrating. The current workaround is to export a PNG with the lyrics, but this has 2 problems: You have to leave kdenlive to create something which is disruptive to workflow, and you completely remove the ability to edit the text later which means if a change to the text is needed later on then you have to delete the entire clip and any effects on it and redo them on a new clip (png). - Adding text via an effect is already possible via the "dynamic text". That effect's intended use is definitely not what I'm proposing, but it does illustrate the point that text via an effect does have its benefits and is currently possible in kdenlive - albeit in a state that would require a lot of expansion to make fully usable. - In instances where multiple title clips are in the timeline but changes like font, weight, color, line spacing, kerning, etc. are needed there is currently no way to apply these across multiple title clips, requiring opening the title clip editor for every single clip to apply these changes. Text as an effect would make these properties easier to modify via the effect tab to the side of the timeline. An option to apply text property changes to groups would greatly improve the workflow and be a welcome addition. (and text properties could very well be a separate effect in itself if kdenlive has that functionality) - Text as an effect instead of a clip would decrease the number of items in the project bin, making looking through the project bin easier and managing folders specifically for text would be one less thing to worry about - This would open up many possibilities regarding keyframing the styling, position, and scaling of the text directly from the text effect and not a transform effect. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
