Wow, that's some sleuthing! And sure enough, I'm able to reproduce that on my
machine by setting the General font size to 15 and putting a  Thunderbird icon
on my desktop.

(And shout out to your mom as a perfect example of someone who can get by just
with FOSS versions of the three most critical computer applications - email,
web browsing, and solitaire :-) )
