Hi,

I've got a new 2 year postdoc position
<http://careers.umich.edu/job_detail/172582/postdoctoral_research_fellow>
available for someone interested in Data Science Education in my educational
technology collective <http://edtech.labs.si.umich.edu/> group. I am
specifically interested in studying Jupyter notebooks (and computational
narratives). Would love to find someone passionate about translating
research into OSS as well!

*Job Summary*
The University of Michigan School of Information is seeking applicants for
a postdoctoral research fellow in the area of Data Science Education, to
support the creation of next-generation educational technologies which will
enhance teaching and learning in the traditional residential environment
and massive open online courses (MOOCs). This position is funded in part
through the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS), and the successful
applicant would work under the direction of Dr. Christopher Brooks
<http://edtech.labs.si.umich.edu/>.

The postdoctoral research fellow will engage in both collaborative,
directed, and self-directed research to develop next-generation teaching
and learning environments for data science. It is expected that the fellow
would employ methods from one or more fields including Human Computer
Interaction (HCI), Data Science, Learning Analytics, or Educational Data
Mining (EDM), and would look at data sources including log files from
educational technologies (e.g. LMSs such as Coursera or Canvas), text
created through student discourse and assignments (e.g. essays,
discussions), student information systems (e.g. student registration &
applications), and self reported measures (e.g. surveys), and data science
toolkits (e.g. Jupyter notebooks). Important duties might include research
and development of predictive models and accompanying software
applications; design and implementation of experiments and/or user studies,
data collection and analysis; and participating in scholarly dissemination
of results through publication and presentations. The postdoctoral research
fellow will work both within a team with students, other postdocs, and
faculty, and a high level of independence and self motivation is required.
This full-time position would be a one-year appointment, with the
possibility of an additional year extension pending funding, availability
of work, and satisfactory performance. The position salary will be
$55,000-$65,000 plus benefits (health) per annum depending upon
qualifications.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science,
Information, HCI, or a related field. A background in any/all of the
following should be stressed in application materials: data mining and
machine learning; data science or computer science teaching, learning, and
education; HCI, infoviz, or collaboration, learning analytics, educational
data mining, or artificial intelligence in education, and software
engineering/software development. Excellent scientific writing skills are
required, and previous supervisory experience and effective project
management skills are an asset. An understanding of the US higher education
system would be beneficial, and the candidate should have a passion for
applied research in this domain.

Applicants should have experience leading and publishing independent
research projects. While there is no major teaching or service requirement,
the fellow will be expected to participate in teaching, networking, and
mentoring activities including giving lectures in courses, participation in
research groups, presenting work at conferences, and advising undergraduate
or graduate students. This Postdoctoral Fellowship is designed to support
the applicant towards advancing their career via mentorship and
collaboration.
