Shit, I figured as much.

In the lab I have just successfully tested Arista SFP-10G-RA-1G-LX (rate adapting transceivers, 10G on the electrical side and 1G on the optical side) and the link came up just fine. So that's an option for small-scale, but these transceivers are quite expensive. Haven't found them 3rd party yet.
