Hi Ede, Jukka, gdms is a data interface for OrbisGIS (and gvSIG), something like GDAL but in java. So it will/would provide more options for reading data from files and databases. That was the idea back then. It also supported partly reading of shape files. Haven't followed up it... maybe Michael knows if it would still make sense?
