Jukka, Thank you for your suggestion. It looks like there is some excitement among other programmers about the ability to use SQLLite, H2, or a similar database to support writable large datasets in OpenJUMP. I agree with the comment in your post, PostgreSQL can be a pretty big elephant for a lot of users.
I have done some work on feature caching for large datasets using binary files accessed directly from Java. However, this work isn't currrently complete. It would be another option. I personally prefer this solution, as it doesn't require the complexity or overhead of JDBC and/or network communications with a separate software package.
