Yes, we're sorry to see Jody go. He's off to work for LisaSoft in Australia. I'm not sure if his duties there will include work on GeoTools/uDig, but I'm pretty sure he'll be trying to stay involved in those projects.
I don't think this will be a fatal blow to either GeoTools or uDig, however. GeoTools is being well supported via the GeoServer crowd, who I think are on a roll right now with funding and releases. uDig is mostly being maintained by Jesse Eichar (another recent departure...), and some other folks around the globe. A key point here is that it's a good thing to have a lot of people and organizations involved in OSS projects, because they aren't badly hurt by any one person leaving.
