Hei, just a thought on the Google zoom slider: they have one advantage: they know their data and it goes just in an out from a certain resolution [5m?] to the world.. so they have a fixed frame. While GIS data in general could reach from [mm] to whatever scale. And you do not need an option to zoom out to the whole world if your data just covers 2km.
