One reason for wanting to remove items from a recent list is that in the
normal course of editing it is typical to save different file names as you
edit versions of the file.  If there is no way to remove the old items, the
recent menu quickly becomes cluttered with old outdated file references.  Of
course, if there are only a fixed number of recent "slots", and older
entries are "pushed off the end" by new additions, then the problem is
self-correcting.
